During Thursday House Night on October 21st, the seminary community learned more about the twenty-two Ugandan martyrs. The presentation was provided by Fr. Lutakome Nsubuga, a Ugandan native himself, who was ordained the newest priest of the Diocese of Spokane in May of this year. Using the famous phrase from Tertullian, “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church,” he described how the fervor of the faith in Uganda and Africa as a whole can be attributed to the sacrifices of these saints. Their feast day is recognized on June 3rd, and the annual memorial mass draws tens of thousands of faithful and lasts several hours long. Using videos and photos from his own visits to Uganda, Fr. Nsubuga provided the seminary a glimpse of his home country’s unique and moving expression of faith.
