Conference: Theology of Celibacy

For House Night on September 30th, Fr. Matthew Nicks, parochial vicar at St. Patrick Church in Pasco, presented a conference on the theology of celibacy. Using scriptural sources and evidence from Church history, Fr. Nicks provided numerous useful insights regarding this aspect of priestly discipline. In particular, the understood requirement of priestly celibacy is, in fact, not an arbitrary imposition of the Church upon these men. Rather, the call to live celibately in order to seek more complete union with God is foundational to the vocation to be a priest. Celibacy has an intrinsic value apart from the priesthood. This conference topic was surely informative to the seminarians as they continue their own discernment of the priestly, and celibate, vocation.
