On Friday, September 3rd, approximately 4,800 people attended the Mass of Installation of Bishop Blase Cupich as the sixth bishop of Spokane. The mass was held in the McCarthy Center on the campus of Gonzaga University.
Roughly 35 bishops, 80 priests, and 40 deacons participated in the mass. Among them were Archbishop Alex J. Brunett of the Seattle Archdiocese and Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. Several current and former Bishop White seminarians, including theologians studying for Spokane, assisted with the liturgy behind the scenes, at the altar, and within the choir.
Right: Bishop Cupich was met with an exuberant standing ovation upon accepting the apostolic mandate of Pope Benedict XVI and taking his place at the cathedra, or bishop’s chair.
